Cricket could split in two: Sir Viv Richards issues dire warning over India-centric controversies

By Nawaz Gohar ; West Indian legendary cricketer and Quetta Gladiators head coach, Sir Vivian Richards, has voiced grave concerns over the future of international cricket, issuing a blunt critique of the ICC and the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI).

The “Master Blaster” remarked that in his illustrious career, he has never witnessed a World Cup as mired in controversy as the upcoming edition. Sir Viv noted that while India was once considered an exemplary host for global cricket, the current situation suggests otherwise. With teams like Pakistan and Bangladesh, and potentially others, hesitant to tour India, he described the situation as a “wake-up call” for the sport.

A Call for Neutrality Richards emphasized that the ICC must ensure World Cups are held in nations that are universally acceptable to all participating members without objection. He warned that if the ICC intends to save the game, it must make non-controversial decisions that are entirely free from political influence.

“If bold decisions are not made in a timely manner, world cricket could split into two factions,” Sir Viv cautioned. He further extended his support to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), stating that their security concerns regarding playing in India cannot be simply overlooked.

Praise for Pakistan’s Hospitality Contrasting the current friction elsewhere, Sir Viv spoke warmly of his experiences in Pakistan. Having been a regular fixture in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he praised the country’s deep-rooted love for the game.

“In Pakistan, outsiders are treated as their own and given immense respect. It is this sincerity and warmth that keeps drawing me back here,” Richards concluded.
