Mosaddek and Rana shatter 21 years of Australian dominance

By Nawaz Gohar ; Cricket, by its very nature, loves a poetic circle. For twenty-one long years, Bangladesh cricket carried the bittersweet, fading memory of Cardiff 2005—the solitary day Mohammad Ashraful’s blade carved out a legendary, mythical victory over the mighty Australians. Generations of Tigers came and went, yet the ultimate ODI conquest of the men from Down Under remained elusive.

On Tuesday night, under the raucous, atmospheric skies of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, history finally stopped repeating itself.

Driven by a spectacular, fairytale return from all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain and a ferocious opening spell by speed merchant Nahid Rana, Bangladesh didn’t just beat Australia; they systematically dismantled them. Even a persistent Mirpur downpour couldn’t dampen the party, as the hosts clinched a historic, statement-making 86-run victory via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to seize a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

When Bangladesh were inserted to bat, the ghosts of past collapses loomed early. However, a vibrant 44-ball 54 from opener Tanzid Hasan gave the Tigers initial momentum, beautifully sustained by a elegant, composed 67 from Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Yet, the true catalyst of the innings arrived in the shape of Mosaddek Hossain. Out of the ODI wilderness since 2022, Mosaddek played an innings born of pure determination. Walking in at a delicate 140-4, he single-handedly transformed a competitive total into a winning one.

His unbeaten 86 off just 70 balls was a masterclass in modern lower-order acceleration, decorated with seven crisp boundaries and three towering sixes. Alongside a vital late-order cameo from Taskin Ahmed (20), Mosaddek pushed the Tigers to a formidable 284-8 in their 50 overs, ruthlessly spoiling an otherwise brilliant bowling performance by Australia’s Nathan Ellis (3-38).

If Mosaddek set the stage with the willow, Bangladesh’s pace battery tore the curtain down on the Australian chase. Taskin Ahmed set the stadium alight by removing Matthew Short with the very first delivery of the innings. From that moment on, Australia looked like a side completely out of answers on a turning, spitting Mirpur surface.

While heavyweights like Cameron Green (52*) and Alex Carey (47) fought a gritty, isolated rearguard action, they were helpless against the sheer velocity of Nahid Rana. The express pacer bowled with venom and immaculate discipline, ripping through the Australian middle-order to finish with spectacular figures of 4-41.

The Turning Point: Australia were showing signs of a fightback at 128-5. Enter Rana and Mosaddek. In a breathtaking spell of collective bowling, Bangladesh triggered a catastrophic collapse, watching the visitors slide to a hopeless 156-9.

Mosaddek capped off his unforgettable evening by snaring 2-37, perfectly complementing Mustafizur Rahman’s clever variations (2-43). When the heavens finally opened with Australia stranded at 191-9 after 42.2 overs, the DLS calculations merely formalized what the packed crowd already knew: the 21-year-old hoodoo was broken.

This victory is more than a 1-0 series lead. It is a monumental psychological shift for a Bangladesh side transitioning into a new era. By comprehensively outplaying Australia in every department, the Tigers have proved that Cardiff was no longer a historical anomaly—it is the standard of what this team can achieve when firing on all cylinders.
